Chapter III - TIE vs NIE in Spain: What’s the Difference?

If you are moving to Spain, you will probably hear two terms very quickly: NIE and TIE.

Many expats assume they are the same thing, but they actually refer to two different concepts within the Spanish immigration system.

Understanding the difference between the two can help you avoid confusion when dealing with administrative procedures in Spain.

In this guide, we explain what the NIE is, what the TIE is, and when you need each one.

What is a NIE?

The Número de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE) is an identification number assigned to foreigners in Spain.

It is used by the Spanish administration to identify non-Spanish citizens in official records and administrative procedures.

The NIE itself is simply a number, not a physical card.

Once assigned, your NIE remains the same throughout your life and will appear in many official documents.

You will use this number for activities such as:

• opening a bank account
• signing a rental contract
• paying taxes
• registering utilities
• interacting with Spanish public administration

What is a TIE?

The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is a physical residence card issued to non-EU citizens who are authorized to live in Spain.

The card contains important information such as:

• your NIE number
• your name and photograph
• your type of residence permit
• the validity period of your residence authorization

Unlike the NIE, the TIE is a physical document that proves your legal residence in Spain.

The key difference

The easiest way to understand the difference is this:

NIE = identification number
TIE = physical residence card

In other words, the TIE card includes your NIE number, but the NIE can exist without a TIE.

For example, some foreigners obtain a NIE when buying property in Spain or conducting financial transactions, even if they do not live in the country.

Who receives a TIE?

The TIE is issued primarily to non-EU citizens who receive a residence authorization in Spain.

This includes people with:

• work visas
• student visas
• non-lucrative residence visas
• family reunification permits
• digital nomad visas

EU citizens usually do not receive a TIE, but instead obtain a green residency certificate.

When do you need a TIE?

If you are a non-EU citizen who plans to live in Spain for more than six months, you will usually need to apply for a TIE after arriving in the country.

This process typically includes:

• obtaining a residence authorization
• booking a fingerprint appointment
• submitting documents at the immigration office
• receiving the residence card

Common confusion for expats

Many foreigners experience confusion because the terms NIE and TIE are often used interchangeably in everyday conversation.

For example, someone might say “you need a NIE” when they are actually referring to the residence card.

Understanding the difference can help you navigate administrative procedures more easily.
